Even if a dog’s tail is kept inside an iron tube for twelve years, it emerges just as curved as before. (Inherent crookedness cannot be straightened; deeply ingrained vices and constitutional flaws resist every attempt at reform.)

Where even offering prime rice at high noon brings no welcome, what will taking hollow chaff yield? (If your finest, most valuable efforts were spurned, offering inferior rubbish is an exercise in futility.)
